On-the-job Training
On-the-job Training for an apprentice may include operation, maintenance and repair of equipment owned by electrical utilities. This area of training may include overhead distribution lines, sub-transmission, transmission and underground utilities.
Private outside electrical construction work may also be required training during the apprenticeship for non-utility companies who maintain or need outside electrical apparatus.
When messenger or guy wire or supporting structures are used to support electrical apparatus and/or the power source is fed and controlled from the street, an apprentice will be required to learn, build and understand the function of electrical systems. This area of training may include street lighting, traffic signals, and mass-transit systems, catenary and trolley work.
Apprentices could also be involved in building substations. This training could include pouring concrete, setting transformers, bending buses, and making electrical connections and any other area necessary for the construction, maintenance and repair of substations.
