National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (CCO) Crane Operators Certification

The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (CCO) is an independent not-for-profit organization formed to establish and administer a nationwide program of certification for crane operators. The purpose of CCO is to set standards for the knowledge and proficiency required for the safe operation of cranes, and to develop valid and reliable examinations to test that knowledge. A sound program of training and certification provides operators with skill and confidence to safely operate sophisticated cranes in a variety of situations. The professional designation as a Certified Operator also assures employers of a proficient worker, without relying on subjective recommendations or judgment. The CCO written and practical examinations have been developed in cooperation with International Assessment Institute (IAI). The written examination program consists of a Core examination in crane operation, as well as four Crane Specialty examinations. The Specialty Exams are Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes, Lattice Boom Truck Cranes, Small Telescopic Boom Cranes (<17.5 tons) and Large Telescopic Boom Cranes (>17.5 tons). Once candidates have taken and passed the Written Examinations, a Practical Examination can be conducted on the Specialty Cranes to be certified. Crane operators certified by CCO must recertify every five-(5) years.
